Is this autumn already?

The weather here has been gorgeous!  Cool nights and warm sunny days–you just can’t ask for better.  I’ve started back on my walking schedule–2 miles every other day.  I think I’ll be able to get back up to speed more quickly and add some jogging in a week or two.

Our baby chicks are a week old now and starting to get feathers on their wings.  They’ve become amazingly adept at pecking and scratching every bit of feed out of the feeder and onto the floor around it.  I just wait until they’ve eaten most of that and then I fill the feeder again.  Of course, any time an arm or anything else intrudes into their little sphere of existence, they freak out and run around cheeping like they’re about to be eaten alive.

The kids and I started schoolwork this week.  Every day they do math, grammar and reading.  This is the first time we’ve tried “notebooking” for their geography lessons.  It gives them a chance to study something that interests them related to our lesson and then write, draw and create a page or two that tells about it.  The pages go into a 3-ring binder as kind of a “scrapbook” of what they’ve learned.  They really seemed to enjoy working on that yesterday, and came up with some pretty nice pages.
There are still a few things I have to work into our curriculum, but right now I’m just focused on getting through this first week to see how everything is going to flow.  So far, so good.

Madlen and I will be going to Jefferson this evening for her volleyball game.  Jefferson is such a neat little town.  The downtown area is filled with neat antique and specialty shops and is always busy with people shopping.  We’ve spent a couple of afternoons there as a family and had a very nice time.  We’ve even talked about renting a couple of canoes and making a short trip downriver.  Anyway, it’s a great place to visit with lots of interesting places and activities for everyone to enjoy.
