Happy St. Nicholas Day!

Last night, we went to Carols in the Park, a display of Christmas trees and decorations themed with Christmas carols that are set up by the Methodist church in Pittsburg.  Rather than being in an actual park, they make a park-like setting in a large building that they own that used to be a grocery store.  It was really beautiful!  I wish I had a digital camera to take pictures of the trees, but all I had was my cell phone.  The pictures came out lousy in the dim light.

My three favorite trees were:
Lo, How a Rose Ere Blooming — a pink and white tree with pearls and pink silk roses;
Joy to the World — a turquoise and silver tree decorated with globes (like the ones you would see on a school desk), and
We Three Kings — a majestic red and royal purple affair, that was almost iridescent in the glittering light.

Today was St. Nicholas Day at our house.  The stockings were filled with candy, nuts and oranges, and each of the kids got a few small gifts.  We started doing St. Nicholas Day as an alternative to the Christmas “gift grab” that everyone else seems so wrapped up in (no pun intended). It’s nice being able to “keep it simple” when everyone else is stressing over finding just the right gift and doing all their obligatory Christmas activities.  And I don’t think the kids have felt deprived because of it.
